Every year I have a group of friends that migrate to Fort Hancock Texas for the opening of dove season. They have been coming for many years. It is always nice to sit down and visit with them. They are sportsmen who enjoy visiting with one another and going out on a hunt. I really think the visiting is more important than the hunting is.
This year’s hunting was great. There were many birds. Most years, the birds only fly in the morning and in the evening. We seemed to have birds moving around for most o the day. The birds did not come in great waves as they have in the past. They did, however, trickle in and out giving great opportunity to use up your ammunition.
We hunted for the first two days of dove season and then had a feast. All the dove were cooked along with steak, chicken, and all kinds of fix’ns. A few green chiles were roasted. A few jalapenos were stuffed and grilled. Beer, wine, and other beverages were shared. Best of all, we had a great time visiting and sharing a little bit of ourselves . There were no neon lights. There was no electronics or special effects. There was no complaining. Just a great group of guys enjoying a cool evening under the stars. This is what life was meant to be.
It is always fun do things like hunting and fishing when you don’t have to worry about people getting hurt. Responsible use of the equipment (such as firearms) leads to peace of mind. By keeping safety foremost, we were able to avoid any situations that could have ruined a great trip.
Thanks for the visit guys. Can’t wait till next year. By the way, you should have seen the birds after you left………lol
